The Opata cherry plum is a hybrid fruit resulting from a cross between a plum tree and a cherry tree.
It was developed by Canadian researchers in the 1970s. It is a hardy shrub that can withstand temperatures as low as -40°C.
It produces fragrant white flowers in spring and purple-red, yellow-fleshed fruit in August. The fruit is larger than a cherry but smaller than a plum. They have a sweet, slightly tart flavour and can be eaten fresh or made into jam, jelly, juice, pie, etc.
The Opata cherry plum needs another plum or cherry plum tree to pollinate it. It grows to around 2.5 metres tall and 2 metres wide. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun.
