Description

Plum Cherry Sapa Prunus Besseyi x  salicina

The Sapa Prune Cerise cultivar is a variety of Opata cherry plum, a hybrid fruit resulting from a cross between a plum tree and a cherry tree. It was developed by Canadian researchers in the 1970s.

The sapa cultivar is distinguished by its dwarf size, exceptional hardiness and abundant fruiting. It can withstand temperatures as low as -40°C and grows to around 2.5 metres tall and 2 metres wide.

It produces fragrant white flowers in spring and purple-red fruit with mauve flesh in August. The fruit is larger than a cherry but smaller than a plum. They have a sweet, slightly tart flavour and can be eaten fresh or made into jam, jelly, juice, pie, etc.

The sapa cultivar needs another plum or cherry plum to be pollinated. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun.
