The Martin saskatoon cultivar is a variety of saskatoon, a fruit-bearing shrub native to North America.
It produces large edible fruit, called saskatoons, which are sweet and tasty. Saskatoons are purple-blue in colour and resemble blueberries. They are eaten fresh or cooked in jams, pies or other desserts.
The Martin saskatoon is derived from the Thiessen cultivar, but has more uniform fruit. It grows upright and reaches a height of 3 metres.
Its fruit is large and tasty.
The saskatoon tree produces a delicious berry called saskatoon or small pear. This beautiful shrub is native to northern climates. It grows best in a sandy loam where water and air flow well.
The plants bloom heavily in the spring and then in July offer a great profusion of purple to blue-purple berry clusters. The fruits have an increased pectin content and are therefore more suitable for jams and jellies.
This shrub grows best in full sun and its fruits are very popular with birds. The saskatoon will have a better fruit set if another variety is planted nearby. The installation of an irrigation system will optimize the yields, especially in periods of drought.
