Of the gooseberries, Pixwell is the most successful. This bushy American cultivar with small thorns developed in North Dakota in 1932, is very hardy and bears sweet-fleshed, tart-skinned, medium-sized fruit that start out green and turn purple as it ripens.<\/p>\n

Choose them green or be patient and wait for them to turn from red to plum. The longer you wait, the sweeter they become. Most often they are picked just between the green and red stages when they are nice and firm, then used for sweet\/tart wine, pies and preserves.<\/p>\n

Pixwell is therefore a beautiful shrub from spring to fall, but it is even more valuable because it provides delicious edible fruit from July to September.<\/p>\n
