The Thiessen saskatoon cultivar is a variety of alder-leaved saskatoon, similar to the Martin cultivar, but with larger, sweeter fruit.
It has a compact habit and produces an abundance of white flowers in May, followed by blue berries at the end of July.
The berries are edible and resemble blackcurrants or blueberries. They are enjoyed fresh or in jelly. The Thiessen serviceberry is self-fertile, but benefits from the presence of another serviceberry to increase its production. It is very hardy and resistant to disease and pests.
Thiessen produces blue-purple fruit, good for eating fresh or in pies, which is probably the best way to enjoy it.
It looks like a large, long, oval-shaped shrub, 4 m (14 ft) high, which is maintained at a height of 2 metres by removing the large-diameter stems.
It flowers early and produces very large fruit. Its flavour is not as sweet as that of the Smokey saskatoon.
The saskatoon tree produces a delicious berry called saskatoon or small pear. This beautiful shrub is native to northern climates. It grows best in a sandy loam where water and air flow well.
The plants bloom heavily in the spring and then in July offer a great profusion of purple to blue-purple berry clusters. The fruits have an increased pectin content and are therefore more suitable for jams and jellies.
This shrub grows best in full sun and its fruits are very popular with birds. The saskatoon will have a better fruit set if another variety is planted nearby. The installation of an irrigation system will optimize the yields, especially in periods of drought.
