Wine grape vines
Hardy hybrid vines
Red wine variety
This section describes a few of the main wine varieties grown in Quebec. Our harsh climate led local wine growers to search out new vine varieties and introduce interesting new flavours to wine lovers. Why not them a try?
The best red hybrid from Elmer Swenson in Minnesota, Easiest to grow, hardy, without need of protection. Tolerates poorly drained soils better than other varieties. Upright, quite vigorous. Takes a long tim to settle in and does not produce well in poor, dry soil. Variable shaped somewhat small clusters. Ripens early mid-season. Moderate sugars of 20 to 22 brix. Hardy to -38°C. Good colour, tannic, well balanced, indistinguishable from vinifera wines (quality grape variety).
